  BECKET
Richard Buton and Peter O'Toole star in this sweeping historic drama that relates the story of an unlikely pair - Henry II, the Norman King of England and Thomas Becket, the Saxon peasant whom Henry has elevated to the position of Chancellor of England. The loving friendship between the two seems to know no bounds, with Becket serving his King faithfully as confidant, advisor and companion troublemaker. But when Henry appoints his friend Archbishop of Canterbury, head of the Church of England, the account takes an ironic turn.
A political move designed to indirectly render the Church under the King's control, Becket's new station affects him in such a way that he finds himself moved toward an uncompromising devotion to God, a rival with whom Henry cannot compete. Henry's obsession with the changed Becket leads to a tense and emotionally-charged battle of wills between the two, resulting in ultimate tragedy.
Filmed on location in England, Becket is a dramatic masterpiece, critically praised for its stunning cinematography and riveting performances.

Most expensive film in history at the time of release, 7 years in the making and the winner of more international honors and praise than any other movie in history.
The film’s subtitle is “ A story of the Christ ”. It chronicles the life of Judah-Ben Hur and his rise to fame and power as a Jew in the midst of the persecution of Rome. Paralleling is the story of Jesus strating God’s kingdom on the earth. Tremendous drama is played out in the struggle of Rome’s power verses God’s love in Ben Hur’s life.
Also included in this video is a one hour documentary on the making of the film by Christopher Plummer.

  THE BIBLE (1966) JOHN HUSTON
John Huston's The Bible...In The Beginning is wonderful movie that captures on film the emotion and drama of the first books of the Bible. From the beautiful images of Adam and Eve in Eden - including the strange shape/figure of the temptor in the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil - up to Abraham's life everything here rings true. Yes, he doesn't follow the Bible to the letter, but that is a minor criticism since it was the director's intention to tell the story in a realistic and believable manner.
John Huston's role as Noah is fantastic, being one of the highlights of the film but pay attention to the people playing his sons and daughter in laws and appreciate how well they were. (VHS)

  DAVID AND BATHSHEBA
Though this film has only a few scraps to offer in the way of scriptural accuracy, it is a visual delight, and one of the very best examples of the lush Technicolor of the mid 20th century, with its deep cobalt blues and incredibly rich reds. The cinematography by Leon Shamroy, along with the massive sets and luxurious costumes (all three were Oscar nominated but lost out to "An American in Paris") make this a fabulous "sword and sandals" epic; it also boasts a dramatic score by Alfred Newman, and one of my favorite dance sequences on film, by the brilliant Jack Cole. One had to be very strong and athletic to do his choreography, and the dancer in this number is the great Gwen Verdon.

Gregory Peck is as King David, and it's always a pleasure to listen to his resonant voice; his recitation of the 23rd psalm, and his prayer at the Ark of the Covenant, are memorable scenes. In this film David is a pale reflection of the Bible character, this story being more about a big Hollywood romance, and the trouble it gets him in along with his partner in sin Bathsheba, played by Susan Hayward

Following the conquest of Babylon, the King of Persia gives a banquet for his people at which he requests the presence of his wife, Vashti. As she refuses the King's demand, Ahasuerus disowns Vashti and goes in search of her replacement. In his harem, he meets the young girl Esther who immediately captivates him with her charm and beauty. Unaware of her Jewish heritage, King Ahasuerus falls in love with Esther. Esther then reveals to Ahasuerus that she is Jewish and asks him to show her people mercy, because of a planned genocide of the Jews by the King's right-hand man, Haman. In doing so, she saves the lives of many innocent people and paves the way for their return to Jerusalem.

  FOURTH WISE MAN
Based on Henry Van Dyke's classic, "The Story of the Other Wise Man", a fictional story set in Biblical times, told in gently comic terms. It concerns a Magi named Artaban (Martin Sheen) who studies the prophecies and witnesses a sign in the heavens that he hopes will lead him and his faithful servant, Orantes (Alan Arkin), to the Messiah. Artaban takes with him three precious gifts to present to the Messiah.
For 33 years, Artaban and Orantes pursue Jesus, only to miss Him at every turn. Along the way, Artaban uses his gifts to help people in dire need. He now has nothing to present to the Messiah when he finds Him. The story culminates on Easter Sunday as Artaban, old and dying, finally encounters the new King, bringing peace to his final moments of life.

  KING DAVID
When this film was released in 1985, the critics were not kind, but I love this film, and think it's a good telling of the story of David, based on I and II Samuel, I Chronicles, and the Psalms. Though much of it has been compressed (David's relationship with Bathsheba is limited mostly to the consequences of it for instance) and some creative license used for plot continuity, it has a tremendous amount of Biblical accuracy.<
